As teachers that are part of a union we support all public employees and their right to collectively bargain. No one goes into education to get rich. However, one tradeoff for not getting paid a high salary is a little job security. Take that away and the luster of being a professional education is diminished. The next steps are lower wages and less benefits.
Most teachers today have advanced degrees. Do we not deserve to be rewarded for improving ourselves professionally? Everyone says how important education is and how that is one of the things that is going to improve the economy, and when these people get elected….its suddenly time to hurt the teachers.
What is the message being sent to those who are aspiring to go into the field of education? With less incentives to go into education, what kind of professionals will be attracted to a career with less pay and less benefits in a field that is already notorious for having low wages?
